
Circadian Lighting in 2026: What Architects Actually Need to Specify
Circadian lighting is not a tunable-white fixture or a CCT schedule. It is an exposure strategy built around spectrum, intensity at the eye, timing, duration and darkness.
An architect writes 5000 K in the morning, 4000 K in the afternoon and 2700 K at night, then labels the schedule "circadian lighting."
That is not circadian design. It is a colour-temperature schedule.
People do not experience CCT. They experience light arriving at their eyes, at a particular time, for a particular duration.
The five variables the specification must carry

Use the right language
CIE S 026:2018 provides the international metrology for describing light in relation to the five photoreceptor types that can influence non-visual responses. In practice, melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance, usually written as melanopic EDI, has become an important metric in integrative-lighting discussions.
This does not mean every building now needs one universal melanopic number. The CIE’s 2024 position statement describes a healthy daily pattern for healthy young adults: high exposure during the day, much lower exposure before bed and near-darkness during sleep. It also makes clear that application requires careful attention to glare, energy, architecture and individual context.
The specification should therefore identify the project goal, user group, occupied hours and relevant standard or certification pathway before setting a target.
Specify light at the eye, not only on the desk
Traditional lighting schedules focus on horizontal illuminance at the working plane. Circadian-related design needs to consider vertical light reaching the eye in realistic viewing directions.
State the measurement or calculation plane, height and orientation. A value measured vertically at eye level facing forward is not interchangeable with a horizontal desk value.
Also define when the target applies. A daytime target that must be maintained from morning to late afternoon is different from a short peak scene used for one hour.
Ask for spectral data
Two luminaires can have the same CCT and very different spectral power distributions. They can therefore create different melanopic responses at the same photopic lux.
For projects with a real circadian objective, ask manufacturers for spectral data or validated melanopic metrics for the actual luminaire and operating condition. Check performance at the dimmed states and CCTs the control sequence will use, not only at full output.
Do not accept a marketing phrase such as “circadian-ready” without the data needed to calculate or verify the intended response.
Write the control sequence
Circadian lighting depends on time, so the sequence of operation is part of the performance specification.
Define the morning rise, daytime condition, evening reduction, night condition, daylight response and manual override. State how the system behaves on weekends, after hours and during seasonal changes.
Avoid designing a system that forces high light exposure when occupants do not need it. Controls should support the target pattern while allowing sensible user agency and operational flexibility.
Protect darkness
A circadian strategy is not only about adding more light in the day. It is also about reducing inappropriate light in the evening and protecting darkness during sleep periods.
In hospitality, residential and healthcare settings, review indicator lights, bathroom night lighting, corridor spill, façade light entering rooms and control panels. A carefully tuned daytime system can be undermined by uncontrolled light at night.
Do not sacrifice visual comfort
High eye-level exposure should not be achieved by placing bright sources directly in the field of view.
Use daylight, bright room surfaces, indirect light, larger luminous areas and controlled distributions to build vertical exposure comfortably. Balance the circadian objective with glare limits, visual task requirements, energy use and the architectural character of the space.
The CIE specifically warns that integrative lighting requires careful design attention to glare and energy. The number is not the design. The complete visual environment is.
What not to specify
- Do not write only “tunable white, 2700 K to 6500 K”.
- Do not assume high CCT equals high circadian performance.
- Do not use one horizontal lux target as the complete circadian requirement.
- Do not promise health outcomes that the lighting design cannot guarantee.
- Do not automate the system without considering actual occupancy and user control.
- In 2026, a serious circadian specification should be performance-led, time-based and verifiable. Anything less is a colour-changing lighting package with a wellness label.
What architects should put in the specification
- The occupant groups and operating schedule for every relevant space.
- The intended daytime and evening exposure strategy, including daylight and shading.
- The measurement plane, likely eye height and view direction.
- Required spectral data, photometry, dimming range and temporal-light-modulation data.
- Scene timing, daylight response, local override, default behaviour and power-reset logic.
- Visual-quality limits for glare, flicker, colour rendering, colour consistency and source visibility.
- Commissioning measurements and records that prove the installed system delivers the intended scenes.
How Alya should handle this
Alya should connect the occupant schedule, daylight condition, spectral product data, photometry, scenes, control narrative and commissioning results. It should show where the brief is incomplete and which assumption created each scene.
It should never promise health outcomes from a colour-temperature slider. That would be technically careless and commercially tempting, which is exactly why the platform must refuse it.
Circadian lighting is not a product category. It is an exposure strategy, and an exposure strategy has to survive commissioning.
